About Andover
- Danebury Iron Age Hillfort, a few miles from Andover, is one of the most extensively excavated hillforts in Britain — a site that has yielded an extraordinary quantity of information about life in Iron Age Hampshire through a series of excavations led by the archaeologist Barry Cunliffe between 1969 and 1988. The fort, which was occupied from around 550 BC to 100 BC, was a major centre of population and trade in the Iron Age, and the excavations revealed evidence of grain storage, metalworking, and animal husbandry on a scale that suggests it was the administrative centre of a substantial territory. The Museum of the Iron Age in Andover displays the finds from the excavations and tells the story of the people who lived at Danebury.
