About Burntisland
- Burntisland Parish Church, built in 1592, was the first church to be built in Scotland after the Reformation and is one of the most historically significant ecclesiastical buildings in the country. Its unusual square plan with a central tower was modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and it was here in 1601 that the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland first proposed a new translation of the Bible — a project that eventually became the King James Bible of 1611.
- Burntisland was the main ferry crossing point between Fife and Edinburgh for centuries, and in 1850 it became the site of one of the world's first railway ferries, the Leviathan, which carried railway wagons across the Forth before the construction of the Forth Bridge. The ferry service continued until the Forth Road Bridge opened in 1964.
- The Burntisland Links fairground, held on the town's seafront every summer, is one of the oldest travelling fairs in Scotland and has been a fixture of the town since the nineteenth century. The fair is a major event in the Fife summer calendar.
- Rossend Castle, which overlooks the town, dates from the twelfth century and was the scene of a famous incident in 1563 when the French poet Pierre de Chastelard was discovered hiding in the bedchamber of Mary Queen of Scots. He was subsequently executed in St Andrews.
