About Cardiff
- Cardiff became the capital of Wales in 1955 — a surprisingly recent designation for a city that had been the largest in Wales since the early 20th century. The city's rapid growth in the 19th century was driven by the coal trade — Cardiff was the largest coal-exporting port in the world at the height of the South Wales coal boom, and the docks at Cardiff Bay handled millions of tonnes of coal every year. The transformation of Cardiff Bay from a derelict dockland into a thriving waterfront district, completed in the 1990s and 2000s, is one of the most successful urban regeneration projects in Britain, and the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) and Wales Millennium Centre are the centrepieces of this transformation.
- Cardiff Castle, which stands at the heart of the city, is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Wales — a Roman fort, a Norman castle, and a Victorian Gothic fantasy combined in a single site. The castle's Victorian apartments, which were created for the third Marquess of Bute by the architect William Burges between 1868 and 1881, are among the most extravagant examples of Victorian Gothic decoration in the world — rooms of extraordinary richness and fantasy that combine medieval imagery, Islamic ornament, and Victorian craftsmanship in a way that is unique in Britain. Burges and Bute also created Castell Coch, a fairy-tale Gothic castle a few miles from Cardiff, which is one of the most romantic buildings in Wales.
- The Principality Stadium, which stands on the site of Cardiff Arms Park in the city centre, is one of the most atmospheric sports venues in the world — a 74,500-capacity stadium with a retractable roof that hosts Wales's home rugby union internationals and that has been the venue for some of the most dramatic matches in the history of the sport. The stadium, which was built for the 1999 Rugby World Cup, has also hosted FA Cup finals, boxing world championship bouts, and concerts by some of the world's biggest artists. The atmosphere at a Wales international rugby match — with 74,000 people singing the Welsh national anthem — is one of the most powerful sporting experiences in Britain.
