About Charlestown
- The limekilns at Charlestown were built by Charles Bruce, the fifth Earl of Elgin, in the 1750s and became one of the largest lime-burning operations in Scotland. At their peak the kilns produced over 30,000 tons of lime per year, which was shipped from Charlestown Harbour to farms and building sites across Scotland and northern England.
- Charlestown was one of the first planned industrial villages in Scotland, designed by the Earl of Elgin to provide housing, a school, and a church for his workers. The village was laid out on a grid plan with a central green, and the original workers' cottages still line the main street today.
- Broomhall House, the seat of the Earls of Elgin, stands in parkland above Charlestown and is one of the finest Georgian houses in Fife. The house is still the family home of the Earls of Elgin and Kincardine, and the family's most famous possession — the Elgin Marbles — were removed from the Parthenon in Athens by the seventh Earl in the early nineteenth century.
- The Fife Coastal Path passes through Charlestown, and the stretch between Charlestown and Limekilns is one of the most scenic sections of the route, with views across the Forth to Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills.
