About Corstorphine
- Edinburgh Zoo, which opened in 1913 on the slopes of Corstorphine Hill, is home to over a thousand animals and is one of the most visited attractions in Scotland. The zoo is particularly famous for its giant pandas — Yang Guang and Tian Tian arrived in 2011 as part of a conservation loan from China — and for its penguin parade, a daily event that has been running since the 1950s.
- Corstorphine has one of the oldest recorded sycamore trees in Scotland. The Corstorphine Sycamore, which stood near the old village centre, was associated with a famous seventeenth-century murder case involving Christian Nimmo and her lover James Lord Forrester. The original tree blew down in a storm in 1998, but a successor tree grown from its seeds continues to grow on the same site.
- The area around Corstorphine was the site of the Battle of Corstorphine in 1335, during the Wars of Scottish Independence, when English forces under Edward Balliol were defeated by Scottish troops loyal to David II. The medieval church of St John the Baptist, which still stands in the village, dates from the fourteenth century and contains some of the finest medieval stonework in Edinburgh.
