- Davidson's Mains takes its name from the Davidson family, who were prominent landowners in the area during the eighteenth century. The village developed as a separate settlement from Edinburgh and retains a distinct identity despite being absorbed into the city in the twentieth century. The traditional high street with its independent shops and community facilities is a focal point for residents.
- Lauriston Castle, which stands on the edge of Davidson's Mains overlooking the Firth of Forth, is a sixteenth-century tower house extended in the Jacobean style in the early twentieth century. The castle was bequeathed to the City of Edinburgh in 1926 by its last private owners, William and Margaret Reid, on the condition that it be preserved as a museum with its contents intact.
