About Derry
- Derry's city walls, which were built between 1613 and 1619 as part of the Plantation of Ulster, are the most complete example of a walled city in Ireland and one of the best-preserved examples of 17th-century urban fortification in Europe. The walls, which are 1.5 kilometres in circumference and up to 9 metres high, were built to protect the new Plantation settlement from attack, and they have never been breached — a fact that gives Derry the nickname 'The Maiden City'. The walls are now a public walkway that offers panoramic views across the city and the River Foyle, and they are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland.
- The Bogside, the Catholic nationalist community that lies outside the city walls, is famous for its murals — a series of large-scale paintings that depict the history of the civil rights movement and the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The murals, which were created by the Bogside Artists — three local men who began painting them in 1994 — include the iconic 'Bloody Sunday' mural, which commemorates the 14 civilians killed by the British Army on 30 January 1972, and the 'Civil Rights' mural, which depicts the march that was attacked on that day. The murals have become one of the most important examples of political street art in the world.
- Derry was the UK City of Culture in 2013 — the first city outside England to hold the title — and the year-long programme of events that accompanied the designation transformed the city's cultural profile and established it as one of the most important cultural destinations in Ireland. The designation reflected Derry's extraordinary cultural vitality, which has produced writers including Seamus Heaney and Brian Friel, musicians including the Undertones, and a tradition of political and social activism that has shaped the history of Northern Ireland. The Peace Bridge, which was opened in 2011 to connect the two sides of the River Foyle, is the most visible symbol of the city's post-conflict regeneration.
