A large Wiltshire village on the River Avon, with a famous tannery heritage and easy access to Salisbury and the New Forest.

Downton is a large village in southern Wiltshire, situated in the SP5 postcode area on the River Avon between Salisbury and Fordingbridge. The village has a long history as a centre of the leather tanning industry — the Downton tannery, which operated for centuries on the banks of the Avon, was one of the most important in southern England — and the village retains a strong industrial heritage alongside its attractive medieval and Georgian architecture.
