About Dungannon
- Dungannon was the principal stronghold of the O'Neill dynasty — the most powerful Gaelic Irish family in Ulster, whose chiefs were the Kings of Tyrone for centuries before the Flight of the Earls in 1607. The O'Neills' resistance to English rule culminated in the Nine Years' War (1593–1603), in which Hugh O'Neill, the Earl of Tyrone, led the most serious challenge to English authority in Ireland since the Norman conquest. O'Neill's victory at the Battle of the Yellow Ford in 1598 — the greatest defeat ever inflicted on an English army in Ireland — was followed by his eventual submission to the Crown and the collapse of the Gaelic order in Ulster, which was replaced by the Plantation of Ulster.
- Tyrone Crystal, which was produced in Dungannon from 1971 to 2010, was one of the most celebrated Irish crystal brands — a tradition of hand-cut crystal that drew on the skills of craftsmen trained in the Waterford Crystal tradition and that produced pieces of exceptional quality and beauty. The closure of the Tyrone Crystal factory in 2010, after nearly 40 years of production, was a significant loss for the town and for the tradition of Irish crystal craftsmanship. The visitor centre, which told the story of the crystal-making process, was one of the most popular tourist attractions in County Tyrone during the factory's lifetime.
- Peatlands Park, a few miles from Dungannon, is one of the most important nature reserves in Northern Ireland — a 267-acre park that preserves a rare example of the raised bog landscape that once covered much of the Irish midlands. The park, which was established in 1990, includes a narrow-gauge railway that carries visitors through the bog, and it provides a vivid impression of the peat-cutting tradition that was once one of the most important industries in County Tyrone. The bog's wildlife, which includes sundews, bog cotton, and a wide variety of birds, reflects the extraordinary biodiversity of the raised bog ecosystem.
