About Masham
- Masham is home to two of England's most celebrated breweries. Theakston's, founded in 1827, is one of the oldest family breweries in Yorkshire and is famous for its Old Peculier strong ale — named after the Peculier of Masham, an ancient ecclesiastical jurisdiction. Black Sheep Brewery was founded in 1992 by Paul Theakston, a member of the Theakston family, after a dispute over the sale of the original brewery. Both breweries offer tours and tastings.
- Masham's market square is one of the largest and finest in North Yorkshire, with a handsome collection of Georgian and Victorian buildings surrounding the central space. The weekly market, held every Wednesday and Saturday, has been a feature of the town since the medieval period.
- Jervaulx Abbey, a few miles to the south-east, is a ruined Cistercian monastery in a beautiful setting on the banks of the River Ure. The abbey was founded in 1156 and was one of the wealthiest monasteries in Yorkshire before its dissolution in 1537. The ruins are privately owned but open to visitors.
- The surrounding countryside is typical of the lower Dales, with the River Ure flowing through a broad valley of meadows and woodland. The area is popular with walkers and cyclists, and the Wensleydale Railway, which runs between Leeming Bar and Redmire, passes through the valley.
