About Millom
- Hodbarrow, on the edge of Millom, was once one of the largest iron ore mines in England. When the mines closed in 1968, the sea lagoon created by the protective embankment became an RSPB nature reserve — now one of the most important breeding sites for little terns in the UK.
- Norman Nicholson (1914–1987), widely regarded as one of the finest regional poets of the 20th century, was born and died in the same house in Millom. His poetry celebrated the industrial landscape of the Furness Peninsula and the surrounding fells with a precision and tenderness that earned him comparison with Thomas Hardy.
