About Paisley
- Paisley Abbey, which stands at the heart of the town, is one of the most historically significant religious buildings in Scotland. Founded in 1163 by Walter FitzAlan, the first High Steward of Scotland and ancestor of the Royal House of Stewart, the abbey was the burial place of Marjorie Bruce — daughter of Robert the Bruce and mother of Robert II, the first Stewart king of Scotland. The abbey was largely destroyed during the Wars of Scottish Independence and subsequently rebuilt, and the current building dates mainly from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Paisley was shortlisted to be UK City of Culture in 2021, and the town's bid — though ultimately unsuccessful — helped to catalyse significant investment in its cultural infrastructure, including the major refurbishment of Paisley Museum.
