- Pontefract Castle was the scene of one of the most dramatic events in English royal history — the murder of Richard II in 1400, almost certainly by starvation on the orders of Henry IV. The castle was later the last Royalist stronghold to fall in the English Civil War, holding out until 1649 after three separate sieges.
