About Roslin
- Rosslyn Chapel, formally the Collegiate Church of St Matthew, was founded in 1446 by William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Orkney. The chapel's extraordinary carved stonework has fascinated scholars and visitors for centuries, and its depiction of plants including maize and aloe vera — unknown in Europe at the time of construction — has generated considerable debate about pre-Columbian contact between Europe and the Americas.
- The Roslin Institute, part of the University of Edinburgh, achieved worldwide fame in 1996 when scientists led by Ian Wilmut successfully cloned a sheep named Dolly from an adult somatic cell. Dolly was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell, a scientific breakthrough that transformed the fields of genetics and reproductive biology and sparked global debate about the ethics of cloning.
- Roslin Castle, which stands on a dramatic rocky promontory above the North Esk, was the principal seat of the Sinclair family for several centuries and was visited by Mary Queen of Scots on several occasions. The castle was largely destroyed by General Monck's forces in 1650 but was partially restored in the seventeenth century and is now available as a unique holiday let.
