About Selkirk
- The Selkirk Common Riding, held each June, is the largest mounted gathering in the world — over 400 riders follow the Standard Bearer as he rides the town's ancient marches. The ceremony commemorates the Battle of Flodden in 1513, where Selkirk sent 80 men to fight with King James IV and only one — Fletcher — returned, carrying a captured English flag. The casting of the colours in the Market Place, where the Standard Bearer dips the flag in memory of the fallen, is one of the most moving ceremonies in Scotland.
- Selkirk bannock, a rich fruit bread made with sultanas and butter, has been baked in the town since the early 19th century. The recipe is said to have been created by Robbie Douglas, a baker who supplied the royal household, and Queen Victoria is said to have eaten only Selkirk bannock when she visited Sir Walter Scott's granddaughter at Abbotsford. The bannock is still baked by local bakers using the original recipe.
- Sir Walter Scott served as Sheriff of Selkirkshire for 33 years, presiding over the county court in the courtroom that now bears his name. Scott was a popular and fair-minded sheriff, and his court was known for its efficiency and humanity. The courtroom has been preserved as it was in Scott's time, with his bench, chair, and the original dock, and is open to visitors as part of Halliwell's House Museum.
- Halliwell's House Museum, in a row of 18th-century buildings on the Market Place, tells the story of Selkirk from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum includes a reconstruction of an ironmonger's shop from the early 20th century, and a gallery dedicated to the Common Riding and the town's textile heritage. The building itself is one of the oldest surviving domestic structures in the Borders.
