About Slough
- William Herschel, the astronomer who discovered the planet Uranus in 1781, lived and worked in Slough from 1786 until his death in 1822, and it was here that he built the largest telescope in the world — a reflecting telescope with a 40-foot focal length and a 48-inch mirror that was the most powerful astronomical instrument of its age. Herschel used his Slough observatory to catalogue thousands of nebulae and star clusters, and his work laid the foundations for the modern understanding of the structure of the universe. The Herschel Museum of Astronomy, housed in the building where Herschel lived and worked, preserves the story of his discoveries and displays some of the instruments he used.
- Slough Trading Estate, established in 1920 on the site of a former military vehicle repair depot, was the first purpose-built trading estate in Europe — a model of planned industrial development that has been widely imitated around the world. The estate, which covers over 500 acres and houses over 400 companies, was developed by the Slough Trading Company to provide modern factory premises for businesses that needed to be close to London but could not afford London rents.
