About Stevenage
- Stevenage holds the distinction of being the first town to be designated under the New Towns Act of 1946 — the legislation that created a programme of planned new communities to rehouse the population of bombed-out British cities and relieve overcrowding in London. The designation was controversial: the existing residents of the old market town of Stevenage objected strongly to the plan, and when the Minister of Town and Country Planning Lewis Silkin visited to explain the proposals he was met with a hostile crowd who booed him and put up signs reading 'Silkingrad'. The residents took the government to court, but the House of Lords upheld the designation, and the new town was built around the old village, which survives as the Old Town — a quiet backwater of Georgian and Victorian buildings separated from the modern town centre by a dual carriageway.
- Stevenage was the first town in Britain to be built with a fully segregated cycle network — a system of cycleways and underpasses that allowed cyclists to travel across the town without encountering motor traffic. The network, designed in the 1950s and 1960s as part of the new town's master plan, was decades ahead of its time and is still used today, though it has been somewhat neglected in recent years. The Stevenage cycle network was a direct influence on the Dutch approach to cycling infrastructure, which was developed in the 1970s and 1980s and has since become the global model for cycle-friendly urban design — making Stevenage an unlikely pioneer of one of the most significant trends in 21st-century urban planning.
- Knebworth House, a few miles south of Stevenage, is one of the most recognisable country houses in England — a Victorian Gothic fantasy of turrets, gargoyles, and battlements that has served as the backdrop for some of the most famous rock concerts in British history. The house, which has been the home of the Lytton family since 1490, was remodelled in the 1840s by the novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton in an extravagant Gothic style that reflected his taste for the dramatic and the theatrical.
