About Stow
- Stow Station, which reopened in 2015 as part of the Borders Railway, is one of the most used stations on the line. The station has transformed connectivity between Stow and Edinburgh, with trains running every 30 minutes during the day and the journey to Edinburgh Waverley taking just 40 minutes. The reopening of the railway has brought new residents to the village, and house prices in Stow have risen significantly since the line reopened.
- Stow Parish Church, which dates from the 12th century, is one of the oldest churches in the Borders. The church was rebuilt in the 18th century but retains some medieval stonework, and the churchyard contains the graves of several generations of the farming families who have worked the Leader valley. The church contains a well — Our Lady's Well — which was a place of pilgrimage in the medieval period, and the village takes its name from the Old English 'stow', meaning a holy place.
- The Moorfoot Hills, which rise above Stow to the north and west, are one of the most extensive areas of upland moorland in southern Scotland. The hills are managed primarily for grouse shooting, and the heather moorland supports populations of red grouse, curlew, golden plover, and short-eared owl. The Southern Upland Way long-distance footpath crosses the Moorfoots above Stow, and the views from the high ground take in the Firth of Forth and the Bass Rock.
- The Leader Water, which flows through Stow on its way to join the Tweed at Leaderfoot, is one of the most important spawning rivers for salmon and sea trout in the Borders. The river is managed by the River Tweed Commission, and the pools below Stow are popular with fly fishers in the autumn. The river valley is a pleasant walking area, with a network of paths along the riverbank.
