About Swindon
- Swindon's identity as a railway town was established in 1843 when Isambard Kingdom Brunel chose the town as the site of the Great Western Railway's locomotive works — a decision that transformed a small market town into one of the most important industrial centres in Britain. The GWR works, which at their peak employed over 14,000 people, built and maintained the locomotives and rolling stock of the Great Western Railway for over a century, and the town that grew up around them — New Swindon — was one of the most complete examples of a Victorian company town in Britain. The STEAM Museum, housed in the original GWR engine shed, tells the story of the works and the community that grew up around them.
- Avebury, a few miles from Swindon, contains the largest prehistoric stone circle in the world — a monument that dwarfs Stonehenge in scale, enclosing an area of 28 acres and incorporating the village of Avebury within its banks and ditches. The monument, which was built around 2600 BC, consists of a massive outer circle of standing stones, two smaller inner circles, and a system of avenues leading to other monuments in the surrounding landscape. Unlike Stonehenge, visitors can walk among the stones at Avebury, and the combination of prehistoric monument and living village — with its pub, its church, and its houses — creates one of the most extraordinary experiences in British archaeology.
- Richard Jefferies, the Victorian naturalist and writer who was born in Coate, a village on the edge of Swindon, in 1848, is one of the most important writers about the English countryside in the 19th century — a man whose books, including The Amateur Poacher, Wild Life in a Southern County, and Bevis, combined precise observation of the natural world with a lyrical celebration of the English landscape that influenced a generation of writers and naturalists. Jefferies's connection with the Wiltshire countryside around Swindon is commemorated by the Richard Jefferies Museum at Coate Farm, and his work continues to be read by those who share his passion for the natural world.
