About Teignmouth
- The railway line through Teignmouth, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1846, runs along the very edge of the sea wall between Dawlish and Teignmouth in one of the most dramatic stretches of railway in Britain. The line passes through five tunnels cut through the red sandstone cliffs and runs so close to the sea that waves regularly break over the track in stormy weather. The section was severely damaged by storms in 2014 and its long-term future has been the subject of major engineering investment by Network Rail.
- Teignmouth was the birthplace of the poet John Keats, who stayed in the town in 1818 and wrote some of his most important early poems here, including "Isabella, or the Pot of Basil" and "Endymion". Keats was drawn to Teignmouth by its mild climate and the beauty of the Devon coast, and his letters from the town give a vivid picture of life in a Regency seaside resort.
- Teignmouth Docks, at the mouth of the Teign estuary, is one of the few working commercial ports on the South Devon coast, handling ball clay from the Bovey Basin — a fine white clay used in the manufacture of ceramics and paper. The port has been exporting clay since the 18th century and remains an important part of the local economy, giving Teignmouth a working character that distinguishes it from the purely tourist towns of Torbay.
