About Thirsk
- Thirsk is famous as the home of James Herriot — the pen name of the veterinary surgeon Alf Wight, whose books about his experiences as a vet in the Yorkshire Dales were adapted into the long-running television series All Creatures Great and Small. The World of James Herriot museum, housed in the original veterinary surgery in Kirkgate, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in North Yorkshire and recreates the world of the 1940s vet.

The escarpment of the North York Moors rises steeply from the Vale of Mowbray, and the views from the top of Sutton Bank over the vale and the Yorkshire Dales are outstanding. The White Horse of Kilburn, a large chalk figure cut into the hillside, is visible from many miles away.
