Channelkirk is a tiny hamlet in the Lammermuir Hills, 5 miles north of Lauder on the A68. Its ancient parish church — one of the oldest in the Borders — sits on a hilltop above the Leader Water valley, and the surrounding moorland is some of the finest walking country in southern Scotland.

About Channelkirk
- Channelkirk Parish Church, which dates from the 12th century, is one of the oldest churches in the Borders. The church sits on a hilltop above the Leader Water valley, and the views from the churchyard take in the full sweep of the Lammermuir Hills and the Tweed valley. The church was rebuilt in the 18th century but retains some medieval stonework, and the churchyard contains the graves of several generations of the farming families who have worked the Lammermuirs.
- The Southern Upland Way, Britain's first official coast-to-coast long-distance footpath, passes through Channelkirk on its way from Cockburnspath on the east coast to Portpatrick on the west coast. The section of the path through the Lammermuirs above Channelkirk is one of the most remote and atmospheric on the entire route, crossing high moorland with views that take in the Firth of Forth and the Bass Rock.
- The Lammermuir Hills above Channelkirk are managed primarily for grouse shooting, and the heather moorland supports one of the highest densities of red grouse in Scotland. The hills are also important for upland wading birds — curlew, golden plover, and dunlin all breed on the high ground — and for birds of prey, including merlin, peregrine, and short-eared owl. The hills are a Site of Special Scientific Interest for their upland moorland vegetation.
- Channelkirk sits on the watershed between the Tweed and Forth river systems, at an altitude of around 250 metres in the heart of the Lammermuir Hills. The hamlet is one of the most remote in the Borders, with a population of fewer than 50 people, and the surrounding moorland is some of the most extensive in southern Scotland. The A68, which passes through the hamlet, is the main road between Edinburgh and the Borders.
