Local knowledge — Cheap Taxi in Jedburgh
Jedburgh is a historic market town on the Jed Water, 10 miles north of the English border. Its magnificent 12th-century abbey, the best-preserved of the four great Borders abbeys, dominates the town from a ridge above the river. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here in 1566, and the town has been a crossing point between Scotland and England for a thousand years.

About Jedburgh
- Jedburgh Abbey, founded by King David I in 1138 for Augustinian canons from Beauvais in France, is the best-preserved of the four great Borders abbeys. Unlike Melrose, Dryburgh, and Kelso — which were reduced to fragments by repeated English raids — Jedburgh's nave and tower survived largely intact, and the abbey church was used for worship until 1875. The west front, with its three tiers of arcading, is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Scotland.
- Mary Queen of Scots visited Jedburgh in October 1566 to hold a justice court, and made a fateful 50-mile round trip on horseback to visit the Earl of Bothwell at Hermitage Castle — a journey that left her so ill she nearly died. The house where she stayed, now the Mary Queen of Scots Visitor Centre, displays a lock of her hair and a death mask, and the story of her visit is one of the most dramatic episodes in Borders history.
- Jedburgh Castle Jail, built in 1823 on the site of the medieval castle, is one of the best-preserved Howard Reform prisons in Scotland. The prison was designed on the principles of John Howard, the 18th-century prison reformer, with separate cells for each prisoner — a radical departure from the communal dungeons of earlier jails. The jail closed in 1886 and is now a museum, with cells preserved as they were when the prison was in use.
- Ferniehirst Castle, two miles south of Jedburgh on the Jed Water, is the ancestral home of the Kerr family, Marquesses of Lothian. The castle was built in 1470, destroyed by the English in 1523, and rebuilt in 1598 in a style that incorporated the latest Renaissance ideas from France. The castle is still occupied by the Kerr family and is open to visitors in summer, with a museum dedicated to the history of the Kerrs and their role in Borders history.
