About London
- London is one of the world's most visited cities, welcoming over 20 million international tourists each year. The city has been continuously inhabited for over 2,000 years, founded by the Romans as Londinium in around 43 AD. It has been the capital of England since the Norman Conquest of 1066 and has grown from a medieval walled city to a sprawling metropolis of over 600 square miles. London survived the Great Fire of 1666, the Blitz of the Second World War, and numerous other catastrophes to emerge as one of the world's most resilient and dynamic cities.
- The London Underground, known as the Tube, is the world's oldest metro system, opened in 1863. It now carries over a billion passengers a year on 11 lines serving 272 stations across Greater London and beyond. The network is supplemented by the Overground, the Elizabeth line, the DLR, and an extensive bus network, making London one of the best-connected cities in the world for public transport.
- London is one of the most linguistically diverse cities on Earth, with over 300 languages spoken by its residents. The city's population includes significant communities from every country in the world, reflecting centuries of immigration and its role as a global trading and financial centre. This diversity is reflected in London's extraordinary range of cuisines, cultural institutions, religious buildings, and neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct identity.
