Local knowledge — Cheap Taxi in Melrose
Melrose is a small, elegant town on the south bank of the Tweed, sheltered by the three peaks of the Eildon Hills. Its ruined abbey — burial place of Robert the Bruce's heart — is the most beautiful of the Borders abbeys, and the town gave the world rugby sevens, invented here in 1883. Abbotsford, Sir Walter Scott's home, is two miles away.

About Melrose
- Melrose Abbey, founded in 1136 by King David I for Cistercian monks from Rievaulx in Yorkshire, is the most ornate of the four great Borders abbeys. The abbey was rebuilt after destruction by Richard II's army in 1385, and the new church — completed in the early 15th century — is a masterpiece of Decorated Gothic architecture, with intricate stone carvings that include a pig playing the bagpipes on one of the roof bosses. A casket believed to contain the embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce was discovered beneath the abbey in 1921 and reburied with ceremony.
- Rugby sevens was invented in Melrose in 1883 by Ned Haig, a butcher and player for Melrose RFC, as a fundraising event for the club. The format — seven players a side, seven minutes each way — proved so popular that it spread across the world, and is now an Olympic sport. The Melrose Sevens, held each April, is the oldest and most prestigious sevens tournament in the world, and the trophy — the Melrose Cup — is the most coveted prize in the sevens game.
- The Eildon Hills, which rise to 422 metres above Melrose, are one of the most significant archaeological landscapes in Scotland. The summit of the North Hill was the site of a massive Iron Age hillfort — the largest in Scotland — with ramparts enclosing an area of 40 acres and evidence of over 300 hut platforms. The Romans later built a signal station on the summit, and the hills are associated in legend with King Arthur and Thomas the Rhymer.
- Trimontium, the Roman fort at Newstead just east of Melrose, was the largest Roman fort in Scotland and the northernmost permanent garrison of the Roman Empire. The fort, which takes its name from the three peaks of the Eildon Hills visible from its walls, was occupied from around 80 AD to 180 AD and covered an area of over 50 acres. Excavations in the late 19th century recovered an extraordinary collection of Roman artefacts, now in the National Museum of Scotland.
