About Basildon
- Basildon was designated as a new town in 1949 to rehouse families from the bombed-out East End of London, and it was built on land that had previously been occupied by a chaotic collection of plotland settlements — informal communities of self-built bungalows and shacks that had grown up on the Essex marshes since the late 19th century, when working-class Londoners bought cheap plots of land as weekend retreats and holiday homes. The plotlands, which at their peak covered thousands of acres of south Essex, were a remarkable experiment in informal urbanism — communities without mains water, sewerage, or proper roads, but with a fierce sense of independence and community spirit. The Plotlands Museum at Langdon Hills preserves one of the original bungalows and tells the story of this vanished world.
- Wat Tyler Country Park, on the banks of Holehaven Creek near Pitsea, takes its name from the leader of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 — the most serious popular uprising in medieval English history, triggered by the imposition of a poll tax and the continuing oppression of the rural poor. Wat Tyler, who led the Essex contingent of the revolt, was killed at Smithfield in London during negotiations with the young King Richard II, and the revolt was suppressed with considerable violence. The park, which occupies the site of a former explosives factory, is now a nature reserve and visitor attraction, and the name preserves the memory of a man who, for a few weeks in the summer of 1381, came closer than anyone else in medieval England to overthrowing the established order.
- Basildon's most famous son is Lee Brilleaux, the founder and lead singer of Dr Feelgood, the rhythm and blues band that emerged from Canvey Island in the early 1970s and became one of the most influential British bands of the decade. Dr Feelgood's raw, stripped-back sound — guitar, bass, drums, and Brilleaux's rasping vocals — was a direct precursor to punk rock, and the band's 1976 live album Stupidity reached number one in the UK charts. Brilleaux, who died of lymphoma in 1994, is commemorated by a blue plaque in Southend and by the continuing influence of Dr Feelgood on British rock music. The Canvey Island music scene that produced the band is one of the most unlikely and distinctive chapters in the history of British popular music.
