About Eastleigh
- The Supermarine Spitfire, the most iconic British aircraft of the Second World War, was designed and built in Eastleigh — the Supermarine Aviation Works was located at the Woolston and Itchen districts of Southampton, but the prototype Spitfire made its first flight from Eastleigh Aerodrome (now Southampton Airport) on 5 March 1936, piloted by Captain Joseph 'Mutt' Summers. The aircraft, designed by R.J. Mitchell, was immediately recognised as exceptional — its elliptical wings, powerful Merlin engine, and exceptional manoeuvrability made it the equal of the best German fighters, and it became the symbol of British resistance during the Battle of Britain. Mitchell died of cancer in 1937, before the Spitfire entered service, and never knew the full extent of his achievement.
- Eastleigh's identity as a railway town was established in 1891 when the London and South Western Railway moved its locomotive works from Nine Elms in London to a new site in Eastleigh, bringing with it hundreds of skilled workers and transforming a small village into a substantial town. The railway works, which built and maintained locomotives for the LSWR and its successor the Southern Railway, were the largest employer in the town for most of the 20th century, and the terraced streets built for the railway workers give Eastleigh its distinctive character. The works closed in 2006, ending over a century of railway manufacturing in the town, but the railway heritage is preserved in the Eastleigh Museum.
