About Medway
- The Historic Dockyard Chatham is one of the most complete surviving examples of a Georgian and Victorian naval dockyard in the world — a 400-year-old complex of ropemaking factories, covered slipways, dry docks, and storehouses that built and maintained the ships of the Royal Navy from the reign of Henry VIII to the closure of the dockyard in 1984. The dockyard produced some of the most famous ships in British naval history, including HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar, which was built at Chatham in 1765. The ropery, which is still in operation producing rope by traditional methods, is the longest brick building in Britain at 346 metres, and the covered slipways — vast timber-framed structures built to protect ships under construction from the weather — are among the most impressive industrial buildings of the Georgian period.
- Charles Dickens spent his formative years in Chatham and Rochester, and the Medway towns are woven throughout his novels with a vividness that reflects the depth of his attachment to the place. Dickens's father was a clerk in the Navy Pay Office at Chatham, and the family lived in the town from 1817 to 1822 — years that Dickens later described as the happiest of his childhood. Rochester, with its cathedral, castle, and ancient High Street, appears in several novels including The Pickwick Papers, Great Expectations, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which Dickens was writing at the time of his death and which is set almost entirely in a thinly disguised Rochester. Dickens returned to the area in later life, buying Gad's Hill Place near Rochester, where he died in 1870.
- Fort Amherst, carved into the chalk cliffs above Chatham, is the best-preserved Napoleonic fortification in Britain — a complex of tunnels, gun emplacements, and barracks built between 1756 and 1819 to defend the Royal Dockyard from a French land attack. The fort, which was designed by the military engineer William Twiss, contains over three miles of tunnels cut through the chalk, and at its peak it was garrisoned by over 2,000 soldiers. The fort was used again during the Second World War as a command centre and air raid shelter, and the tunnels preserve graffiti and inscriptions from both periods. Fort Amherst is now open to the public and offers guided tours of the tunnels and gun emplacements.
