About Southend-on-Sea
- Southend Pier is the longest pleasure pier in the world — stretching 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary, a distance that required the construction of a railway to carry visitors to the pier head and back. The pier was built in its current iron form between 1887 and 1890, replacing an earlier wooden structure, and at its peak in the 1940s and 1950s it attracted over five million visitors a year. The pier has been damaged by fire and by ships colliding with it on several occasions — most dramatically in 1986 when a dredger struck the pier head and destroyed a large section — but it has always been rebuilt, and it remains the defining symbol of Southend and one of the most recognisable structures on the Thames Estuary.
- The Prittlewell Prince, discovered in 2003 during excavations for a road improvement scheme near Prittlewell Priory, is one of the most significant Anglo-Saxon archaeological finds of the 21st century — a royal burial chamber dating from around 580 AD, containing a remarkable collection of grave goods including gold foil crosses, a Byzantine flagon, a Frankish gold coin, and the remains of a lyre. The burial is thought to be that of a king or prince of the East Saxon kingdom, possibly Saebert, the first Christian king of the East Saxons, and the presence of both Christian and pagan objects in the grave suggests a moment of religious transition. The finds are now displayed in the Southend Museum and have transformed understanding of early medieval Essex.
- Leigh-on-Sea, the fishing village absorbed into the western edge of Southend, retains its identity as one of the most characterful communities on the Thames Estuary — a place of weatherboard cottages, working cockle sheds, and traditional fishing boats that has resisted the homogenisation that has overtaken much of the Essex coast. The Old Town, clustered around the High Street and the waterfront, is famous for its seafood — particularly the cockles, whelks, and jellied eels sold from the sheds along the foreshore — and for its community of artists and musicians who have been drawn to the area since the 1970s. The annual Leigh Folk Festival, held on the foreshore in June, is one of the most popular folk music events in the south-east.
