About Athelstaneford
- Athelstaneford is the legendary birthplace of the Saltire, the white diagonal cross on a blue background that serves as Scotland's national flag. According to tradition, before a battle fought near the village in 832 AD, the Pictish king Óengus II and his Scots allies saw a formation of white clouds in the shape of St Andrew's cross against a blue sky, which they took as a sign of divine favour. They went on to defeat the Northumbrian army, and the Saltire became the symbol of Scotland.
- The Saltire Heritage Centre in Athelstaneford churchyard tells the story of the Saltire's origins through a series of displays and a short audio-visual presentation. The centre, which is housed in a restored doocot, is one of the smallest heritage attractions in Scotland but draws visitors from around the world who come to see the birthplace of the national flag.
- Athelstaneford Parish Church, which dates from the twelfth century, is one of the oldest churches in East Lothian and contains several interesting historical features including a medieval font and a collection of carved grave slabs. The churchyard contains the graves of several notable local figures and offers views across the East Lothian countryside.
