About Granton
- Granton Harbour was built in the 1830s by the Duke of Buccleuch and became one of the busiest ferry terminals on the Firth of Forth, handling passengers and goods crossing to Burntisland in Fife. The harbour also served as a base for the Royal Navy during both World Wars and was home to a significant fishing fleet in the early twentieth century.
- The Granton Gasometer, a Grade A listed structure that dominates the waterfront skyline, is one of the finest examples of Victorian industrial architecture in Scotland. Built in 1898, the telescopic gasometer stored coal gas for Edinburgh's street lighting and domestic supply. Its future as a centrepiece of the regeneration development has been the subject of extensive community consultation.
- The Edinburgh Waterfront regeneration project, centred on Granton, is one of the largest urban development schemes in Scotland and aims to create a new sustainable neighbourhood on the former industrial land along the Firth of Forth. The project includes a planned extension of Edinburgh's tram network to serve the new community.
