About Mayfield
- Mayfield takes its name from the May family, who were prominent landowners in Midlothian during the medieval period. The village developed as a residential community in the twentieth century, growing alongside the neighbouring mining settlements of Newtongrange and Easthouses as the Lothian coalfield expanded.
- Newbattle Abbey, close to Mayfield, was founded as a Cistercian monastery in 1140 and became one of the wealthiest religious houses in medieval Scotland. After the Reformation the abbey passed to the Kerr family and was converted into a country house. It now operates as Newbattle Abbey College, a residential adult education college that has provided opportunities for mature students since 1937.
- The Borders Railway, which passes through Newtongrange adjacent to Mayfield, reopened in 2015 after a gap of nearly fifty years. The line was originally closed as part of the Beeching cuts in 1969, and its reopening was the longest new domestic railway line to open in Britain for over a century. The railway has transformed commuting times between Midlothian and Edinburgh.
