- Thirlestane Castle, on the edge of Lauder, is one of the finest Renaissance castles in Scotland. The original tower house was built in the 13th century, but the castle was transformed in the 1670s by the Duke of Lauderdale — one of the most powerful men in Scotland during the Restoration — into a palatial residence with elaborate plasterwork ceilings that are among the finest in Britain. The castle is still the home of the Maitland family and is open to visitors in summer.

The incident, known as 'Bell the Cat' after the fable of the mice who proposed to bell the cat, gave Archibald Douglas his nickname 'Bell the Cat' and demonstrated the power of the Scottish nobility to defy even the king.
