- John Dunlap, who was born in Strabane in 1747, was the printer who set the type for the first printed copies of the American Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia on the night of 4 July 1776 — one of the most significant acts of printing in the history of democracy. Gray's Printing Press in Strabane, where Dunlap learned his trade, is now a National Trust property that tells the story of his life and the printing tradition of the Foyle Valley.
