- Hawick's cashmere industry dates to the early 19th century, when local mills began importing raw cashmere from Mongolia and Kashmir to blend with the fine wool of Cheviot sheep. The ceremony commemorates a victory over English raiders at Hornshole in 1514, when local youths defeated a party of English soldiers returning from Flodden. The Cornet, a young unmarried man elected to lead the riding, carries the town flag throughout the week.
