About High Wycombe
- High Wycombe was the centre of the British furniture-making industry for over two centuries — a town whose craftsmen, working in the beech woods of the Chilterns, produced the Windsor chair and the other vernacular furniture forms that furnished the homes of the English middle classes from the 18th century onwards. The industry, which at its peak employed thousands of workers in the town and the surrounding villages, was based on the abundant supply of beech timber from the Chiltern woods and on the skills of the bodgers — itinerant craftsmen who worked in the woods, turning chair legs on pole lathes — and the chair-makers who assembled the finished pieces in the town. The Wycombe Museum tells the story of this vanished industry.
- The Hellfire Caves at West Wycombe, carved into the chalk hill beneath the church of St Lawrence, were excavated in the 1750s by Sir Francis Dashwood, the founder of the notorious Hellfire Club — a society of aristocrats and politicians who met in the caves for ceremonies that combined elements of Freemasonry, paganism, and political satire. The club's members, who included the Earl of Sandwich and the politician John Wilkes, met in the caves' inner sanctum — a chamber deep in the hill beneath the River Styx — for rituals that were rumoured to involve black masses and orgies, though the reality was probably more prosaic. The caves are now open to the public and are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Buckinghamshire.
- Hughenden Manor, the Victorian country house a few miles from High Wycombe that was the home of Benjamin Disraeli, the Conservative Prime Minister and novelist, is one of the most personal political shrines in Britain — a house that preserves the rooms, books, and personal objects of one of the most colourful and controversial figures in Victorian public life. Disraeli bought Hughenden in 1848 and lived there until his death in 1881, and the house reflects his taste for the Gothic, the theatrical, and the romantic. The National Trust, which manages the house, has recently revealed that Hughenden was used during the Second World War as a secret intelligence centre for the production of maps and aerial photographs used in bombing raids over Germany.
