About Joppa
- Joppa takes its name from the ancient port of Jaffa (now part of Tel Aviv) in the Holy Land, a naming convention that was common in Scotland during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when biblical place names were fashionable for new settlements. The neighbourhood developed as a seaside resort for Edinburgh's middle classes in the Victorian era, and its attractive stone terraces date largely from this period.
- Joppa Rocks, the rocky foreshore at the eastern end of Portobello Beach, is a popular destination for rock pooling and coastal exploration. The rocks are exposed at low tide and support a variety of marine life including crabs, anemones, and small fish. The area is also a good vantage point for watching seabirds on the Firth of Forth.
- The boundary between Edinburgh and East Lothian runs through Joppa, making it one of the few neighbourhoods that straddles two council areas. This administrative boundary has historically created some complexity in the provision of local services, but residents on both sides of the line share the same community identity and use the same local facilities.
