About East Knoyle
- Sir Christopher Wren, who was born in East Knoyle on 20 October 1632, is widely regarded as the greatest architect in British history. His father, Christopher Wren the Elder, was rector of East Knoyle at the time of his birth, and the family's connection to the village is commemorated in the church of St Mary the Virgin, which contains a remarkable plaster ceiling decorated by the elder Wren. The younger Wren went on to design St Paul's Cathedral — his masterpiece — along with fifty-two other London churches rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666, as well as the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, the Royal Hospital Chelsea, and many other significant buildings. He is buried in St Paul's Cathedral, beneath the epitaph: "Lector, si monumentum requiris, circumspice" — Reader, if you seek his monument, look around you.
