About Pontypridd
- Tom Jones, the singer who became one of the most successful Welsh entertainers of the 20th century, was born in Treforest, a village on the edge of Pontypridd, in 1940. Jones's career, which began in the clubs and pubs of the South Wales valleys, took him to international stardom with hits including It's Not Unusual, Delilah, and Green Green Grass of Home, and he has remained one of the most popular live performers in the world for over 50 years. A statue of Jones stands in the town centre, and the town takes considerable pride in its most famous son, whose voice — powerful, soulful, and unmistakably Welsh — is one of the most distinctive in popular music.
- The Pontypridd Old Bridge, built in 1756 by the self-taught stonemason William Edwards, is one of the most remarkable engineering achievements of the 18th century — a single-arch bridge with a span of 42 metres that was, when it was built, the longest single-span bridge in the world. Edwards had made three previous attempts to build the bridge, all of which collapsed, before he hit on the solution of incorporating cylindrical holes in the haunches of the arch to reduce the weight and prevent the arch from being pushed upward by the weight of the spandrels. The bridge, which is now a Grade I listed structure, is one of the most important examples of 18th-century engineering in Wales.
- The Rhondda Heritage Park, a few miles from Pontypridd, tells the story of the South Wales coal industry through the preserved buildings and machinery of the Lewis Merthyr Colliery — one of the most important coal mines in the Rhondda Valley. The park, which opened in 1989 on the site of the colliery, offers underground tours of the mine workings and surface tours of the colliery buildings, and it preserves the memory of the communities that grew up around the coal industry in the Rhondda. The coal industry, which employed hundreds of thousands of men in the South Wales valleys at its peak, shaped the culture, politics, and identity of the region in ways that are still felt today.
