About Traquair
- Traquair House, which has been occupied since 1107, is the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland. The house has been visited by 27 Scottish and English monarchs, including Mary Queen of Scots, who stayed here in 1566 with her infant son, the future James VI. The famous Bear Gates at the end of the avenue have been locked since 1745, when the 5th Earl of Traquair vowed they would not be opened until a Stuart king sat on the throne again — and they remain locked to this day.
- Traquair House Brewery, established in 1965 in the 18th-century brew house, is one of the oldest working breweries in Scotland. The brewery uses the original equipment and recipes to produce a range of strong ales, including the famous Traquair House Ale — a dark, complex beer that has been brewed here for over 50 years. The brewery is open to visitors, and the ales are exported to over 40 countries.
- The Minch Moor, which rises above Traquair to the south, is one of the finest walking areas in the Borders. The Southern Upland Way crosses the moor on its way from Traquair to Selkirk, following an ancient drove road that has been used for centuries to move cattle from the Highlands to the markets of the south. The views from the summit of the moor take in the full sweep of the Tweed valley from the Eildon Hills to the Moorfoot Hills.
- Traquair Kirk, the small parish church in the village, dates from the 18th century and contains memorials to the Stuart family who have owned Traquair House for over 500 years. The church is a simple, dignified building typical of the rural kirks of the Borders, and the churchyard contains the graves of several generations of the Stuart family and the farming families who have worked the Traquair estate.
